My Robotics Experience

FIRST Portfolio

As my high school experience comes to an end, this is a reflection on my years of FIRST Robotics Competition and the impact the program has had on both my technical and soft skills.

2025 - Reefscape

    My Role

The Reefscape season concludes my fourth and final year in FRC and my sixth year participating in FIRST. For Reefscape, I took up new roles as Team Captain and leader of our Electrical and Drive subteams.

    Advancements

This was my best season to date, with our robot making significant advancements through electronics and computer vision. A big improvement initiative that saw many benefits was the creation of an electrical subteam, enabling us to improve the abilities of our robot in numerous ways. Through the design of custom printed circuit boards with Altium designer, we created custom control to a variety of sensors and outputs through our own custom CAN Bus protocol. By teaching younger students extensively about electronics in robotics, I am sure that our robot's electrical capabilities will only continue to grow and flourish in the coming years.

    Achievements

This season was one of our best, with our team earning awards at each competition we competed at. At the FIRST Ontario Provincial Championship we earned the Innovation in Control Award, at the University of Waterloo Event the Autonomous Award, and at the Durham College Event the  Team Sustainability Award. Our robot finished 20th in Ontario, with our endgame climb topping out at 5th in the world!

    2024 - Crescendo

      My Role

Crescendo was an intriguing game, filled with strategy and a variety of exciting game objectives. This year, I advanced to the roles of Senior Mechanical Leader, Robot Driver, and Drive Team Leader.

      Advancements

2024 was an exciting year for our team, with our robot acting as a complete product throughout the design cycle. Due to our increased usage of Computer Aided Design and iterative prototyping, we were able to create what I consider to be our team's most beautiful robot. This was also our first year utilizing swerve drive, and I quickly learned the intricacies and challenges associated with this critical part of our robot's design and drive-train.

      Achievements

We earned the Quality Award at the University of Waterloo Event and the  Industrial Design Award at the Georgian Event. Our robot qualified to compete at the Provincial Championship and we finished our season competing at the World Championship in Houston, Texas. I feel incredibly privileged to have driven our robot in front of thousands at this incredible level of competition.

      2023 - Charged Up

        My Role

Charged Up kicked off my second year on the team and first year in leadership roles, with leadership positions on the Mechanical and Computer Aided Design subteams.

        Advancements

In 2023, our team prioritized building a robot characterized by reliability and robust construction. Leveraging the power of CAD and SolidWorks throughout our design process, we engineered a durable and dependable robot, ready to tackle the high speeds and collisions of competition. This focus on engineering principles ensured our robot could consistently perform, embodying our commitment to building a machine able to stand up to the tough challenges of competition.

        Achievements

In 2023, our team earned the Imagery Award at the University of Waterloo District Event. We finished our season competing at the Ontario Provincial Championship.

        2022 - Rapid React

          My Role

Rapid React kicked off my rookie year of FIRST Robotics Competition and our team's first year back since the Pandemic. As well as my rookie year on the team, this was also my first year as our team's driver, controlling our robot at the University of Waterloo Competition where we earned first place!

          Advancements

Throughout the 2022 season, our team focused on restructuring and preparing for the future, all while facing the challenges of the ever present pandemic. Covid-19 shortened our build season to under 6 weeks, and despite our robot not having its signature green powder coat due to timing, we were still able to compete competitively at a high level.

          Achievements

This year our team competed competitively, earning First Place at the University of Waterloo Competition.
